Flowers and plants are the number one summer home accessory! Adding them to your home brings the outdoors in, freshens the room and adds a natural pop of colour! Impressions Property Styling stylists, Anna and Sarah, are here to teach you everything you need to know about styling with plants this spring and summer season!
Sarah
“100% real. There are so many benefits to having real plants in your home. They help to purify the air, reduce C02, and remove harmful toxins that are in our homes. They can help improve mental health and they make a house feel calming, inviting, and stylish! At the end of the day, fake plants are all made of plastic so instead of helping the air in your home you could be doing the exact opposite. If we can all reduce buying plastic and buy real plants instead then we are helping our homes, our planet and our health.”
Anna
“This depends….Some people find the idea of faux plant offensive but they do have a place in the styling world. They require no care and always look good. They can be an expensive initial purchase but will last for years without the need for ongoing care.
For those who love the real thing and will not compromise, real flowers bring a touch of elegance to a room. However, they do need to be maintained every couple of days by trimming the steams and changing the water, and they need to be replaced every 6/7days, which can become expensive.”
Sarah“Buying floral and greenery for decorative purposes can be super expensive! But guess what… Floral and greenery are all around us! Get outside, grab a pair of secateurs, and make some beautiful scavenged floral arrangements. (Only take what you need and be kind to the plants you take from) “
Anna
“Keep it simple – if owners prefer fresh flowers a large bunch of white Oriental Lilies are good value for money – they last up to 2 weeks, have a great smell to help disguise bad odours.”
Sarah
“Natives make beautiful arrangements but the best thing about them is they will last for at least a week. They even look great dried so no waste!”
Anna
“Lilies offer the best value for money, purely because they last longer (around 2 weeks if maintained). But indoor plants are the hot choice for greenery right now. Plants such as Devil’s Ivy, Zanzibar Gem, Foxtail Fern and Snake plant (also known as Mother-in-law’s tongue) are the popular choice right now.”
Sarah
“Do your research! Start off with plants that are hard to harm such as devils ivy, snake plants and if you want a bigger plant try a Kentia palm. All of these can tolerate drying out and a little neglect if you are one of those people that forgets about you plant babies.”
Anna
“This depends on a couple of factors… The conditions of the room i.e direct sunlight, draughts, low light and how prepared you are to look after your plant. Five indoor plants that are tough enough to withstand some neglect are the Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Devils Ivy, Rubber Plant and Chinese Monkey Plant.”
Sarah
“It depends on the plant but most indoor plants will love a brightly lit spot in front of next to a window, or in the case of something like a fiddle leaf fig you need bright indirect light. So you want a nice light room, but no actual sun rays hitting the plant as it will burn.”
Anna
“Plants help to soften hard surfaces and can bring a room to life. Plants are often an after thought but they often provide the finishing touches to a space. They look great in bathrooms, bedrooms, and living areas, such as the centre piece on the dining table, or can look fabulous clustered together on a buffet/console.”
