There is something about styling your own bedroom, whether you are a teenager still living at home, a tenant renting for the first time, or a homeowner about to embark on a full blower renovation, the bedroom is the first space you get to call your own, so why not create a space that suits your personality and reflects your own style.
Bed head:
A bedhead creates immediate impact in a bedroom and whether the bedhead is timber, wrought iron, leather or upholstered, it will add instant luxury.
The bed head you choose should reflect the overall style of the space, so take your time to research all the options. If your going for a resort style bedroom, consider bamboo or rattan. A sleek timber bedhead would suit a mid century styled bedroom. Where as a decorative wrought iron statement bedhead will set the tone for the perfect boho dreamy space.
An upholstered bedhead can become anything if you select the material to match the style of the room, consider lush velvet for a bit of Hollywood glamour, linen for a soft classic look, or be brave and select bold patterns and colours to add a drama.
You can purchase bedheads from most bedding stores, online retailers, upholstery stores or even second hand and antique dealers.
Linen:
We can’t talk about creating a beautiful bedroom without talking about the linen. Bed linen is like the icing on the cake, it is the final decorative flourish that turns an everyday room into the luxurious, private oasis that we are all aiming for.
Starting with the sheets; There are so many options to suit your needs, so it’s all about personal comfort. Choose natural fibres such as cotton or bamboo for breathability, or for a super glamorous look try satin; the new ‘jersey style’ sheets are designed to feel like your old favourite t-shirt, or if you just want comfort and warmth you can’t go past good old fashion flannel.
There are also numerous options for the bed cover, from doona covers, coverlets or beautifully embroidered quilts and blankets. The choice should come down to the style of room as well as your own personal comfort.
For a formal or classic look, consider a brocade coverlet or quilt, team it with matching euro pillows, and shams, then layer with complimentary cushions. The final look should be structured, balanced and the bed is always made. There is no need to make your bed each day if you prefer the casual, beach or boho style, try a French linen doona cover, teamed with a mismatch of cushions in different patterns, colours and sizes, finish with a blanket, throw or another quilt casually thrown on the end of the bed.

Lighting:
It’s important to choose the right lighting fixtures for a bedroom. When it comes to lighting, both function and design need to be considered.
Both task lighting and ambient lighting are needed in the bedroom. Table lamps, wall sconces, or mini hanging pendants over the bedside tables will all make it easy to read in bed, while adding style.
The ceiling light in a bedroom should reflect the style of the space, as well as set the mood for the bedroom. Chandeliers add instance romance, glass and steel lighting will suit a sleek and modern space, while a designer shade will add immediate drama and interest. Consider using a dimmer in the bedroom: by simply turning a switch you instantly get to change the mood from bright and airy to soft and romantic.

Window coverings:
Window coverings in bedrooms do need to be practical and before anything else it is important to consider air flow, light control and privacy. But the window furnishings in your bedroom will also create ambiance and can be used to set the tone for the overall atmosphere you are trying to create.
Layering two or more types of window coverings is a great way to deal with the practical requirements without compromising on the final look. One of my favourite looks for the bedroom is a block out curtain behind and a sheer curtain in front. The block out will control the light and privacy, while the sheer fabric curtain at the front creates a softer, billowing effect that will soften and filter the light.
To create a luxurious look, make sure the curtains are hung above and beyond the window frame. Hanging the window furnishings just below the ceiling line will instantly make the room feel larger and more spacious.

Storage:
Now when we are talking about creating a beautiful space, you wouldn’t think that storage would be part of the story, but the fact is having ample storage translates to being able to keep your space clean and organised. And it is much easier to create a beautiful space when the evidences of real life are out of sight.
Bedrooms are often considered a ‘sanctuary’ or ‘romantic,’ ‘a space away from the everyday’ (I can hear all the parents of young children laughing now….), but the truth is a bedroom is also a practical space. We get dressed here, we dump our bags, jackets and shoes here. There are often family meetings and conferences here and as much as we love the idea of a private personal space, sometimes real life just gets in the way. The idea of ample and well planned out storage means we get to hide a bit of that real life behind closed doors. Keeping a space visually free of clutter and mess is an important element to creating a relaxing, calming and beautiful space.
Some easy ways to improve the storage in your bedroom;
Custom designed cabinetry; not only looks good but a well-designed robe will double the amount of storage. Consideration is given to shoe storage, maximising hanging storage and using draws to sort and separate.
Beds with storage; consider a gas lift bed or a bed with storage draws built into base. Not only do they look great with a large range of Bedheads, colours and styles, but you also get so much, easy to access space under the bed.
Beautiful baskets; if you can’t hide your storage then flaunt it! There are so many beautiful baskets that can be used for hiding scarves, bags, extra clothes or personal items. Check out local homewares stores such as freedom, pillow talk or IKEA. Baskets can be placed on the floor, at the end of a bed or top of wardrobes.
