Picking and styling the right colours for your home
Everyone’s personal style is different. You might have an affinity for the funky and fill your home with retro-décor, or an appreciation for modern minimalism and its ode to empty space. Maybe your dream home resembles a cosy farmhouse cottage with a butler’s pantry, or an old warehouse transformed into a haven of industrial chic. Either way, your aspirational atmosphere is born from the colours you choose, and the way in which you incorporate them into your home.
Colour sets the tone of a room, it decides if a space should be relaxing or exciting, tender or rebellious, productive or playful. Each colour and tone sets off an emotional reaction in every person who sees it. A deep red room, filled with velvet and intense tones draws out passions and heat, while an array of blue tones throughout a white room bring the calming presence of the ocean into a space.
The colours you choose should speak to you and bring you joy, while blending seamlessly with your décor and style, but they should also match the intentions of a room. What mood do you want people to feel when they enter your dinning, lounge room, or guest bedroom? What colours will help you relax and unwind in your bedroom. Together we will learn exactly how to style all the colours of the colour wheel.
Sitting outside in a rainforest garden, breathing in the world. Green is natural and relaxing, allowing your eyes a place to rest and evoking feelings of peace and tranquillity. A natural green can be brought into a home in may ways, but the most common is by adding plants. Filling a room with all kinds of plants can bring the outdoors in and with it a peaceful environment.
Don’t get caught up in the natural green movement. Experiment with emerald green in a velvet couch or throw, if you’re feeling wild add a neon green accessory to a smooth room for a strong pop.
@styledbydi created an amazing jungle feel in this bedroom! Even with green all over Di knows plants always make a room better!
We all know deep reds like crimson and maroon are the colours of love and passion but be careful with your rooms of desire; studies show that too much crimson can create hostility and irritation.
Bringing different shades into new spaces can raise adrenaline levels and build excitement. Carnelian and scarlet are perfect for cushions and accessories to electrify any room.
@fenton_and_fenton are experts in red, whether its a small pop or an explosion, it’s all about balance.
Sunshine and happiness. This one sounds corny but a little bit of yellow can remind you of a warm summer day and create joy. Feel free to experiment with different shades, anything from cream to buttercup will ease yellow tones into a space, but be cautious of brighter tones… Studies show people are more likely to lose their temper in bright yellow rooms, they can even make babies more likely to cry.
This magical use of yellow comes straight from Impressions Property Styling stylist Sarah! Keep an eye on our blog for ‘at home with Sarah’ coming soon!
If you live a high stress life blue is the colour for you. No matter the shade, blue is said to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Light blues and warm blues create a calming environment and of course are linked to the sea. A Bold blue can have the opposite effect, some say it can enact sadness and heartache.

Purple is the colour of royalty, for a period of time Queen Elizabeth 1 forbade anyone outside of the royal family from wearing it. To this day it screams luxury and sophistication. The deeper the purple the more drama and respect it demands. A purple piece is a statement in any room, it draws attention and everything else should complement it.
This luxurious purple and green combination is from @greenandmustard.
Orange is the wild card of colours. It creates more excitement and enthusiasm than red and makes anyone, and everyone feel energised and alive. It’s also a hard one to style… but don’t let that scare you away. Start by adding small pops to a colourful room, pillows and throws also work but a create colour demands a creative style. Add some burnt orange curtains or an apricot feature wall and make orange the statement of a space.
