Is the Tray the Stylist’s MVP
– An Investigation
– An Investigation
Recently the Impressions’ Team was given some homework. We were all to focus on the styling of one element, for example coffee tables, bookcases or dining tables; collate images of what we liked and then talk about what we were specifically drawn to. Was it the vignette? The layout? The items being used? The colours? The simplicity?
As images started to flood the group chat, each one showcasing the stylists’ unique personalities and preferences, with descriptions about what we liked and why, we noticed a running thread throughout – the tray.
It turns out the tray is the most versatile styling piece, with the unique ability to be used in any room, on any surface, for a multitude of design purposes – the Most Valued Player of the interior styling world.
Using the tray means applying the properties of intentional styling, to visually calm the eye by reducing visual clutter and to create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere by keeping things looking tidy, organised and collected.
The tray serves as an anchor, adding length and width to a cluster of smaller items which, without said tray, may look too small, out of place or just a little lost.
The tray adds interest, coming in a range of various sizes, shapes, colours and textures. A wooden tray can add warmth to stone benchtops or glass surfaces, a mirrored tray will reflect light and add a touch of luxe, whereas a stone tray will bring contrast and visual interest to large areas of wood.
The tray provides borders, establishes zones and creates a defined space within a larger surface. What’s more, they can be used on any type of surface including softer furnishings such as fabric ottomans.
The tray is versatile and functional. Need to store a collection of souvenirs from your overseas travels to tell a story – add the tray. Is your curved soap dispenser not sitting flush on the bathroom vanity – add the tray. Does your bedside table feel cluttered and unorganized – add the tray.
We at Impressions are calling it. The real MVP is the tray.
It’s not just for serving Mother’s Day breakfast in bed.
