Canberra’s new real estate portal is everywhere. From buses to social media, Zango is the new big thing in the Capital. Developed as a collaboration of Canberran real estate agents, it’s aiming to transform Canberra’s real estate industry.
Zango is a the new real estate portal in Canberra that is taking on the external companies that dominate the industry. With advertising fees of $1,500 to $2,000, companies like Allhomes and Realestate.com are facing a major competitor. Zango director Ben Faulks is sick of these multinational tech companies profiting off the Canberra real estate market.

We are used to the quirks and individualities of both these sites and now we are putting Zango to the test. We will share what we love (and hate) about real estate portals and see how this new site stacks up.
The first thing our staff noticed when scrolling through the Zango home page was the explore section. Lauren went through and named all the landmarks, the tram in Gungahlin, the spaceship in North Canberra, and the Arboretum in Molonglo Valley. Without clicking past the home page the personalisation of Canberra and it’s distinct regions is visible in Zango. Clicking further into the site each suburb has not only property statistics but a description of the area that only a local could write, from its culture to the most well known cafes and bars.
As property stylist, we are usually looking for a specific property. We know the address and the agents that we want to search, but for users who are looking for a home to buy or rent, search filters are incredibly important.
Real estate portals have quite a few filters, both Allhomes and Zango have the four main options. These are property type, price, size, and number of bedrooms, bathrooms and parking. The defining aspects of these sites and their usability are in the detail: the extra filter options.
Let’s start with Allhomes. In Canberra, Allhomes is the most popular real estate portal, widely used across Australia, it is used by local and interstate buyers and agents. Allhomes provides eight details feature options, two of which stand out. The disability friendly and over 55’s filters are the standout options here. People with disabilities and accessibility issues are often held out of the real estate market with only a limited number of Canberra properties being accessible. Allhomes provides an easy option to define searches so only completely flat homes, or homes needing minimal additions, are shown. This is more than just single story homes and appartments with an elevator; accessible homes need to be completely flat. No steps or ridges, doors large enough to fit a wheelchair and a bathroom spacious enough to be fitted with commode. This simple filter that Allhomes provides creates an opening for people with disabilities and accessibility issues to enter the property market.
Zango claims it is the real estate portal specifically for Canberrans and it’s search options stand true to this statement! It provides 42 filters that cater to the modern and evolving Canberran, including features such as broadband access and ten types of cooling/heating. One feature stands out above the rest; the option to include surrounding suburbs in your search. This feature prioritises the chosen suburb in search results, but expands the radius to include similar surrounding suburbs. This feature highlights Zango’s knowledge of Canberra, as each suburb has in depth information, including not only sales and property statistics, but local knowledge such as cafes and culture, all of which plays into this feature.
Zango has focused on their users, each part of the website if clear and easy to use, but more importantly, tailored to the needs and wants of everyday Canberrans. Allhomes has been a strong and continuous presence in Canberra real estate for 20 years and in that time they have created some incredible features. With Zango only in it’s first few it’s up to you to decide.
